Last Thursday I bought in Rome a new Advent calendar. Actually I had already seen on a shop on line but was not available, so I was really happy when I saw it in the store!
It is a calendar inspired by the Victorian Christmas tradition. The title is 'Charles Dickens' Christmas World '. I do not know what will come out from the windows but I find the design very reminiscent!:)

Thinking about Dickens and his Victorian Christmas I want to share with you a text from Sketches by Boz, in which he wrote about the spirit which this feast should be enjoyed!

Lo scorso giovedì ho comprato in un negozio a Roma un nuovo calendario dell'avvento. A dire il vero l'avevo già visto in uno shop in line ma non era disponibile. Così quando l'ho visto nel negozio sono stata davvero contenta! E' un calendario ispirato alla tradizione natalizia vittoriana. Il titolo è 'Charles Dickens' Christmas World'. Non so cosa uscirà dalle finestrelle ma trovo il disegno veramente rievocativo!:)

A Christmas Dinner

In his 'Sketches by Boz', a collection of short pieces published as a book in 1836, Dickens wrote about the essence of Christmas as a a time of goodwill to all men anf family conviviality.
Dickens Christmas story describes a Christmas dinner at the home of Uncle and Aunt George. Originally published in Bell's Life in London in 1835 under the name 'Scenes and Characters No. 10 Christmas Festivities'.
"Who can be insensible to the outpourings of good feeling, and the honest interchange of affectionate attachment, which abound at this season of the year? A Christmas family-party! We know nothing in nature more delightful! There seems a magic in the very name of Christmas.
Petty jealousies and discords are forgotten; social feelings are awakened, in bosoms to which they have long been strangers; father and son, or brother and sister, who have met and passed with averted gaze, or a look of cold recognition, for months before, proffer and return the cordial embrace, and bury their past animosities in their present happiness.
Kindly hearts that have yearned towards each other, but have been withheld by false notions of pride and self-dignity, are again reunited, and all is kindness and benevolence!
Would that Christmas lasted the whole year through (as it ought), and that the prejudices and passions which deform our better nature, were never called into action among those to whom they should ever be strangers!"

Nei suoi "Sketches by Boz', una raccolta di pezzi brevi pubblicati in un libro nel 1836, Dickens ha scritto su l'essenza del Natale come una stagione di buona volontà per tutti gli uomini e di convivialità familiare.
Questa è una mia 'libera' traduzione del brano tratto da Christmas Dinner scritto nel 1835. Dickens descrisse una cena di Natale a casa dello zio e della zia George. Originariamente il brano fu pubblicato in Bell's Life in London in 1835 con il nome Scene and Characters No. 1 Christams Festivites.
"Chi può essere insensibile alle effusioni al buon sentimento, e lo scambio onesto di affetti che abbondano in questa stagione dell'anno? Una festa di Natale per tutta la famiglia! Non conosciamo nulla di più piacevole! Sembra una magia nel nome stesso del Natale.
Gelosie e discordie vengono dimenticati; i sentimenti si risvegliano in seno a chi li aveva da tempo estraniati; padre e figlio, o fratello e sorella, che si incontravano ed evitavano gli sguardi o si trattavano con freddezza per mesi prima, porgono e restituiscono un cordiale abbraccio, e seppelliscono le loro animosità del passato nella felicità presente.
Cuori gentili che hanno ardentemente desiderato protendere verso l'altro, ma sono stati trattenuti da false nozioni di orgoglio e dignità, sono di nuovo riuniti, e tutto è gentilezza e benevolenza!
Ci vorrebbe il Natale per tutto l'anno (come dovrebbe), e che i pregiudizi e le passioni che deformano la nostra migliore natura, non dovrebbero mai essere chiamati in causa e rimanere sconosciuti!"
